US backs new Australian gallium facility with US$174m investment
The US is backing a new gallium production facility in Western Australia with an estimated US$174 million investment.
Built and operated by Alcoa at its Wagerup alumina refinery, the plant is expected to produce 100 tonnes of gallium a year – potentially up to 10% of global demand – as the US and its allies look to reduce reliance on China for the critical mineral. Construction began in late August following a groundbreaking attended by government and industry representatives from Australia, Japan and the US.
